Sedges (Carex) is a huge genus. The first 29 named taxa were described by Linnaeus in 1753. In 1909 the genus already contained 793 species and many lower taxa, 253 of them were from Europe (Ref.: 2). Today Koopman (2011) (Ref.: 2) states over 2.000 species worldwide and about 520 species, subspecies and hybrids for Europe. 126 hybrids (2011) are still unnamed (only their hybrid formula is described). Every year several new taxa are added to the list. 'Only' about 90 taxa of this genus are present in Slovenia (Ref.: 4). Yet, this is quite enough to make their proper identification often a serious challenge. This is also due to specific shape of their flowers and inflorescences. We do not normally think of the grasses as flowers, yet they are. Some specific botany knowledge, also in terminology, is needed to manage their determination.( src)
